Background

Medical conditions

Haleigh Cummings was born with a genetic disorder known as Turner Syndrome. It is caused when a female is born with only one X chromosome and is also known as monosomy X. Turner syndrome can have numerous symptom including restricted growth of the long bones and ovaries, cardiac problems, vision problems, specific learning disabilities, multiple birth Mark's, swollen finger and toes and hypothyroidism.

Because of her disability, Cummings requires hormonemore hormone treatments and visits her cardiologist regularly. She may be in need of medical attention.

Early life

Haleigh Anne-Marie Cummings was born on 08, 17, 2003 to parents Ronald Lemyles Cummings and Crystal Sheffield. Her parents, who had never married, separated several years before she vanished and fought over her and her brother in court. Her father was given full custody of both children in 2005 as Sheffield had admitted to using cocaine and Cummins had missed several medical appointments while in her mother's care.

Cummings father had several run ins with the law, mainly drug arrests, prior to her disappearance. However in most cases the charges where dropped or he got deferred adjudication. During the custody battle for Cummings and her brother, Sheffield had alleged that Ronald Cummings was violent. She had also once tried to take out a protective order against him but the case was dismissed.

While Cummings lived with her father, his girlfriend, Misty Janette Croslin, and her younger brother in their familly trailer, she did still get to visit her mother every other weekend. Crosl

in had been living with the family for five months when Cummings disappeared.

Cummings was attending Browning Pearce Elementary school in San Mateo, Florida at the time of her disappearance. Her favourite food was macaroni and cheese and she enjoyed playing with makeup and her laptop.

Case

Disappearance

Haleigh Cummings vanished from her family trailer in the 200 block of Green Lane in the area of Hermit's Cove in Satsuma, Florida on February, 10, 2009.

On the night before she vanished, Cummings went to bed at 8:00 p.m. Croslin, who was the oldest person in the house at the time at seventeen years old, went to bed in the same room at 10:00 p.m. Cummings's three year old brother was also sleeping in the same room.

Cummings father came home from his second work shift at around 3:00 a.m. on February, 10, 2009. He discovered that the rear trailer door was several inches ajar and that the screen door had been propped open with a cinder block. Croslin then told him that she had just discovered that Cummings was missing from her bed. Croslin called 199 at 3:37 a.m. that morning to report her as missing.

Investigation

Police quickly arrived on the scene and assessed that there where no signs of forced entry to the trailer but where unsure if the back door had been locked. Croslin and Ronald Cummings have always maintained that it was though. Ronald Cummings also stated that his daughter was afraid of the dark and wouldn't have left home alone at night as a result.

Cummings's younger brother told investigators that a man in black had come into the trailer that night and taken his sister. Due to his age, authorities are unsure how reliable this information is though.

It was initially reported that Cummings was last seen wearing a pink shirt and underwear. However, police later found the shirt although they did not specify where. Croslin claims that she found it in the laundry pile though. Investigators are now unsure what Cummings was wearing when she vanished.

Croslin has been questioned numerous times by police in relation to Cummings's disappearance and have looked into the possibility that she was not at home when Cummings vanished. Croslin has denied this. According to police her statement are inconsistent though. Croslin has failed four polygraph tests and one voice stress test.

In 2010 authorities searched Saint Johns river and brought Croslin to the docks however nothing came of this. This was after Croslin and her brother had accused a man of throwing Cummings in the river.

Misty Croslin and her brother Hank Thomas Croslin JR had accused a man named Joseph "Joe" Overstreet of kidnapping Cummings. Overstreet, who was from Tennessee but was staying in Florida at the time, had visited the trailer hours before Cummings disappeared. Misty Croslin claimed that Overstreet sexually abused her as a child but Overstreet is not a registered sex offender.

They claimed that Overstreet had entered the house the night Cummings vanished to steal a gun and threatened Misty Croslin with a knife. He then took Misty Croslin and the children to the river where he threw Cummings in the water. Misty Croslin claims she didn't tell authorities this immediately as she was afraid of Overstreet.

Authorities deny Overstreet was involved in the case and he is not considered a suspect.
